Information for Training Recruitment and HR Staff

I have asked around for suggestions on the best materials for training recruitment and Human Resources staff. Of course, the best training is practice, supplemented by one on one conversations with a mentor. Third party material has its place, however. These books have been recommended to me by others and I have found them worthwhile for people getting started in the Human Capital industry: "Take this job & Sell It" "Workforce Crisis: How to Beat the Coming Shortage of Skills And Talent" "T… Continue

Steal a Line from this Hedge Fund

We don't all work at elite hedge funds in the hometown of Martha Stewart and Paul Newman. No, many of our companies live in the mundane: building birdhouses, formulating new adhesives, providing insurance, or manufacturing engine parts. However, we should still strive to imbue our companies with the same pursuit of excellence. We can learn a lot from the simple statement of philosophy by Bridgewater's President and Chief Investment Officer from their company website. The basic message is an ove… Continue

Say Hello to Henry Ford

In the recruiting industry, we're about a hundred years behind the times. It's the year 1908, not 2008: our work is personal, full life cycle, hands-on, low-volume, and usually roughly unmanaged. But we're in 1908 - the year of the assembly line! Are you ready for the big change? Are you ready for assembly line recruiting? After speaking with a recruiting director at a major global staffing firm recently, I realized that our whole industry is just about to make the shift that most other industr… Continue

Time for a Social Network Administrator

How can I personally have an eight million person candidate database when many Fortune 500 companies have less than a million? Of course: it's the simple, exponential power of social networking sites. You have probably heard how important these sites are to recruiting, and how they will only increase in value over time. Many companies have implemented programs to enhance the online and network potential of their sourcing teams and management. Programs include budget increases, marketing campaign… Continue

Not better than nothing..

Agency recruiters, especially those in independent companies often "split" fees with other companies or external recruiters. The goal is to get better recruiting bandwidth on a requisition, especially when it is a position not close to your core competence. By recruiting on splits, agencies can immediately "fill their plate." In theory, it would be great to have a network of trusted external recruiters that you could "split" deals with, and conversely get a lot of workable requirements without a… Continue
