Since many applicants have a tendency to misrepresent themselves on their resumes, employers are often stuck hiring people who are not as qualified for the positions as they are originally led to believe. This can cause a lot of problems; including large amounts of money lost due to work not done properly and having to either train the individual or hire another. Because of this,
pre-employment testing is becoming increasingly popular. This has led many firms that handle such diagnostics to constantly try to re-vamp their services in order to attract more business in a market that is beginning to be competitive.
This is one of the reasons that CPS Human Resource Services recently announced its newest addition to
employment testing; modular based testing. A new concept to be introduced to the public hiring sector, modular based testing is based on several different individual test components, which include an assortment of skills that are necessary for a variety of different job categories.
Through this, employers are able to select three or more test modules, instead of having to sort through over 100 separate questions to come up with the best
pre employment test for their applicants. CPS’s new program is based on individual module tests which each consists of 20-questions pertaining to different skills such as communication or an applicants ability to analyze information.
In a recent press release, CPS test rental manager Dr. Howard Fortson used a meter reader position to explain how the modules CPS consultants can help employers create can be customized to test applicants efficiently.
“A meter reader needs certain skills, understanding written information and reading meter dials to name a few, in order to perform the job,” Said Dr. Fortson. “But say a city agency uses its readers to hand out water conservation pamphlets as well. Now you’ve added an interpersonal relations component to the job function. With modular testing you can easily account for the change and build a test that takes that into account.”
“Using a modular test can help save agencies money and time, yet still grants flexibility to tailor a test to any job relevant requirements,” added CPS talent acquisition manger Shelley Langan.
“Great care has been taken in creating these modules to ensure only the highest functioning items measuring the competency are included,” concluded Dr. Fortson. “The end result is a superior measurement of relevant abilities required for a particular position.”
