High Unemployment Creates Jobs in Rhode Island

Although Rhode Island no longer has the worst unemployment rate in the country, the state’s jobless percentage is still high. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 12.1 percent of people were unable to find jobs in Rhode Island during April, which is a good deal higher than the national average of 9.4 percent. Only a year ago the jobless rate was 7.4 percent.

According to the Providence Journal, a few out of work Rhode Islanders may soon benefit from the rising unemployment rate. The state Department of Labor and Training (DLT) recently announced that it will be hiring at least 17 new employees to help out with the needs of the large percentage of the population that is unemployed.

Each of the five public netWORKri centers will receive new workers. These facilities are located in Newport, Pawtucket, Providence, West Warwick and Woonsocket. By hiring these new workers the newspaper say that the centers’ staff will be increased by 50 percent.

According to the most recent report from the DLT, 30,173 residents utilized these facilities in 2008. By increasing the number of workers at these centers, those who visit will be better serviced.

“Adding jobs in the One-Stop Career Centers allows us to expand the number of staff at a time when job seekers can use additional assistance in connecting to training opportunities and finding employment,” The Providence Journal quoted Sandra M. Powell, director of the DLT, as saying.

These facilities assist Rhode Island job seekers in a variety of ways including; interviewing skills, computer skills, meetings with recruiters, a place to search the Internet for job listings, resume writing help and access to phones and fax machines.

These new Rhode Island jobs are being funded by economic stimulus money and will be considered temporary positions. The funding is expected to available for these jobs until October of 2010, which means the area’s economy will have time to recover.

Available positions are expected to include senior employment and training interviewer and business service specialists. Salaries are expected to range from between $35,438 and $39,838. Other positions will also likely be created elsewhere in the state from the economic stimulus funding.
