Hi everyone. I posted a related message on the main forum, but being based in Philadelphia, I figured I'd pose a similar question here, and directed more toward the life-science sector. I'm contemplating refocusing my consulting company,
The Marengo Group, potentially on the virtual teams niche. Historically, we've focused on "the human side of project management" with a specialty in virtual teams. Our work is at the crossroads of project management, organizational effectiveness, and information technology.
Our partners all have extensive experience in these domains, plus I'm a founding member of
The Creating WE Institute, which focuses on harvesting new approaches to engagement and innovation. In addition, my books,
Napoleon on Project Management (on lessons from Napoleon's rise and fall), and
Managing the Gray Areas (on making better decisions from broader perspectives) are both very relevant to the issues that pertain to successful virtual team leadership.
As we all know, people are increasingly working in a virtual and/or remote environment, due to expansion, mergers, telecommuting, offshoring, travel restrictions, etc. This makes things such as engagement, alignment, trust, etc. especially challenging, and requires cultural change. Also technology is evolving at rapid speeds, and organizations are struggling with the appropriate use, trying to keep up with the early adopters.
This is very relevant to talent retention as well. People are coming to expect to be able to work virtually. This will be even more prevalant in the future, as trends are headed in this direction. Organizations who don't keep up will lose.
The point isn't that virtual teams are the way to go for companies; it's that, like it or not, virtual teams are here to stay, so we better learn how to address the unique challenges. Many companies overlook this and aren't set up for success.
I assume addressing this would also direct our focus more toward the HR space (and perhaps IT as well), and not specifically project management. It would include organizational alignment diagnostics, cultural and gender intelligence, efficient process design, engagement, collaborative technology, making effective use of virtual worlds (i.e. Second Life, etc.), success factors and pitfalls with virtual teams, etc. -- and of course, project management.
To all HR executives and managers: Do you see this as a compelling challenge? Is this something the HR industry struggles with? What are some of the others things (in this area or others) that keep you up at night? I'm trying to get a sense of the perceived needs in the industry, and thought this would be a good forum to start.
Hidden in the Deep Web are vast oceans of documents and pages. Hidden in those pages are the tracks of millions and millions of job seekers and passive candidates.
A Korn Ferry International employee stated that there are many different tools and ways to go about finding "passive" candidates. He found that the best way is to ask executives he respects in the industry and with whom he has a good relationship. It's a two way exchange - he calls them down the line with challenging and interesting opportunities and they in turn help with referrals when they can.
What is your favorite way to search for passive candidates?
